An Open Letter
As you all may have read in my previous post on Brokenness, my sister, my friend, my suh, passed away this year. This post is dedicated to her, to you, Shania!
Suh!! Wow… [Silence. Thoughts. Tears] I’m missing you! How are you doing up there? If I had to guess, you’re probably praising, worshiping, and singing right about now. I always thought you had a beautiful voice. If only I had the chance to have one more Jam Session with you and the “Jam Fam”! Lordy, those sessions always kept me going. I look back through our videos and pictures often, lol!! We were so goofy and silly; I loved it! I remember first meeting you on my visit to Southern 5 years ago… Time sure does fly by! Please tell me you’re not still being clumsy up there, and going around breaking “foots” and ankles, lol!!
When I first got the news I couldn’t believe it. I was on my way to New Orleans. Though my heart is broken, I know that you’re much better off than any of us are here. I’m so happy that you got the chance to marry the love of your life and to start your journey in ministry. We ALWAYS talked about how that was your calling and purpose and what do you know…. That’s exactly what you were doing when God called you home! I’ll never forget the day that you told me I motivated you to “get right”. Well, I’ve gotten off track a little, but now it’s you that are returning the favor and motivating me to get back on track.
So let me tell you, I finally met your husband! I must say, he’s a great man! We sat down and talked after your home going service. Although we never got the chance to have our “talk”, Your husband and I did, and from the bottom of my heart I want to let you know that I understand, I thank you, and as always, I love you & you know that! Oh, and Mama ‘Nia (Your mother) is a WARRIOR! I mean, you told me that she was a minister but you didn’t tell me she was a POWER HOUSE! I pray that I have at least half of the strength that your mother has. There’s no doubt about it that she has JESUS all up, down, around, and through her soul. Lastly, Mama Ty created a scholarship in memory of you! It’s for young girls that are choosing to walk along the same path as you in nursing and cosmetology.
Suh… You know you went away as a QUEEN! Hair was slayed, makeup was slayed, everything was slayed! You were beautiful just as you always were & you wore a crown!
Please visit me in my dreams! I’ll see you later!
REST IN PEACE!
